QUICK FACTS - SO WHAT IS THIS PPC WEB SPY PROGRAM?
|
Example results of a search on the phrase "Brad Callen" |
I'll give you my complete review of Brad Callen's
PPC Web Spy program later on this page.
Before I do that, I'll give you the bird's eye view of the application so that you can figure out
immediately whether there might be some benefit to
downloading the software and trying it out.
The goal of PPC Web Spy is to reveal which keywords are being used by
AdWords advertisers
who are paying to have their ads displayed on page one of Google's organic search results.
The assumption is that if they can afford to be on page one they must be doing something right,
and it is probably in the selection of their
keywords.
PPC Web Spy is actually a
Firefox plugin (it won't work with any other browser)
which you download to your PC. Once installed, a clickable toggle appears in the lower right
of your browser. This toggle activates the application, after which time whenever you do
a keyword search at Google extra information appears on the page when search results are presented.
In particular, for each sponsored advertisement that appears, a green button with the label
"View Keywords" appears under the ad. Click on this button and up pops a screen with a selection
of the keywords being used by the AdWords advertiser.
In other words, exactly what the advertiser does NOT want you to know is made available to you!
QUICK FACTS - WHO CREATED PPC WEB SPY?
 |
| Brad Callen |
Brad Callen is best known for his two earliest products:
SEO Elite, which is software that can be used to figure out the weaknesses
in your site and offer suggestions for how to get it to rank for the keywords that you
need to use to bring you traffic, and
Keyword Elite, a more general keyword tool which offers an array of
built-in projects, one of which includes mining search engines for keywords based off
a seed keyword, so that massive keywords lists can be generated essentially at the push
of a button.
One of the characteristic features of Brad's software is that they are all applications that
run on your PC, and which go out an fetch information from the web as needed.
This is also true of
PPC Web Spy. But in this case, the source of the information that
is retrieved is more guarded. I suspect that Brad runs a
data-collection server
that supplies all of the results which PPC Web Spy makes available when you click on any
of those little greeen buttons that pop up a collection of keywords from an AdWords advertiser.
One of the hallmarks of these applications, historically, is that they have been well-designed
and easy to use. We will see if that is also true of PPC Web Spy.

MY PPC WEB SPY REVIEW BEGINS HERE. . .
I am giving Brad Callen's
PPC Web Spy program a
4-star rating. Unlike some of
the earlier keyword tools that Brad has put out, this one suffers from one problem that
I find somewhat annoying, so I have to lop off that last star in my rating until such time
as it is fixed (I suspect that it's a fixable problem). I'll cover that problem shortly.
First, let's address the question of whether it really IS possible to uncover the keywords
and the ad copy that your AdWords competitors are using to make a bundle on the web. The
short answer to this is YES.
It can be done because advertising is something that, by its
nature, is entirely open to the public. You only have to perform a Google search on any
term you like, to see sponsored advertisements appear. So you know immediately that the
ads you are looking at are associated with the keywords you typed in. By writing software
that automates this task of "typing in keywords to see what comes back" it is possible to
learn a great deal about who is advertising for what, which keywords, and ad copy.
The concept of
keyword spying is not at all new. In fact, there are already some
very good keyword sky services available on the web. One of the most impressive of these
is
Keyword Spy, which is a monthly membership site that allows you to find virtually
all the keywords that are being used by your competitors, and you can download up to
50,000 keywords per day! That's an astonishing benefit.
No wonder that this is the keyword service that all the super affiliates recommend.
Of course, not everyone can afford to pay for a monthly service when they want to spy
on their AdWords competitors. That's something that Brad Callen realized when he dreamed
up the idea of creating
keyword spy software that could be sold for a one-time fee.
PPC Web Spy certainly is affordable. The
Platinum version, which allows you to see up
100 of the keywords from each advertiser, costs $97. But the FREE version won't cost
you a cent.
The limitations to the free version are that you will only be able to see 10 keywords
from each advertiser. So you'll perhaps see enough to know that there is more to be seen,
and that's why you'll quickly decide that you need to upgrade.
So, that you can follow what I am talking about in my review, here's a screen shot of the
keyword popup that appeared after I ran a search in Google on the keyword "arbor". Why
arbor? Well, first I ran a more generic search on the term "gardening tools" and
saw that advertisers were bidding on the term
arbor, so I ran a second search
with
arbor to get a proper idea of what it was all about. This is the screen shot
obtained after clicking on the first advertiser's "View Keywords" button, and then clicking
on the
arbor keyword to show the ad copy explicitly...

| WHICH VERSION OF PPC WEB SPY DO YOU WANT? |
Take a look at that screen shot above for the term arbor.
This was retrieved with the Platinum version of
PPC Web Spy, so it shows up to 100 keywords that Brad Callen's data server has
managed to associate with the same advertiser. I have clicked on the Cost/Day button to
order the results according to how much money the advertiser is spending per day on each
keyword.
Who would have thought that someone would spend $900+/day on the keyword 'arbor'?
In fact, the object of their desires is garden arbors, which are apparently
gardening-related accessories that are very popular. If I was running
a gardening related website I would have just learned that adding a page or two on
garden arbors would be a very good idea. I also know now how much money I will likely
have to spend if I want to use PPC advertising to bring in customers - about 72 cents a visitor.
Only merchants selling garden arbors are likely to spend this kind of money,
but the important point is that had we been a gardening tools supplier, the information
that searches like this reveal is very illuminating.
Might I have learned this same information using the FREE version of PPC Web Spy?
Probably not. Supposedly the 10 keyword results returned with the free version are from
a randomly-ordered list, whereas the Platinum version delivers the 100 keywords
with the greatest ad spend associated with them. Supposedly this means those same keywords
are the most profitable ones since it scarcely makes any sense to pay, for example, $900/day
on a keyword if it is not generating at least that amount in net profit.
As a side note, it is well known that the most profitable keywords in some niches can return up to
five times the investment in ad fees, so it only takes a few good keywords in the right niche
to make a living from pay per click marketing. But it is incredibly hard to find these keywords,
and that is why keyword spy tools are so popular.
If you do download PPC Web Spy, you'll very likely soon wish that you had invested in the Platinum
version. However, even the paid version has some problems with it, which I'll cover next.
| WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT PPC WEB SPY? |
There are two real problems you'll discover when you start to use PPC Web Spy while
searching for results using Google.
THE ADDICTION PROBLEM
The first problem is that those little green
"View Keywords" buttons are seriously addictive. Every time you see them appear you'll
want to click on them just to see what the advertiser is doing. Maybe what you'll find
is something completely unexpected that will take you in a whole new direction away
from the subject of your initial search.
Well, the truth is that the web has always functioned that way,
but the level of diversion here is a lot greater because you can see ALL the keywords that an
advertiser is bidding on, and not just the ones related to the search you just performed.
THE HANG PROBLEM
The other problem that PPC Web Spy suffers from is one that likely stems from a poor
sorting and delivery algorithm at Brad Callen's data center. This problem could be fixed with
a little ingenuity, so it might very well go away one day.
In the meantime, though, it is extremely common to click on the "View Keywords" button and
get a popup that puts up a "loading results" icon that never actually returns any results.
My guess is that this is happening for advertisers who have a very large list of keywords
associated with them. I suspect that the keyword fetch is hanging because a keyword sort
is taking place in real time at the data center.
Needless to say, this sort should be precomputed, so that we get results immediately, without
the hanging. This is the reason I give PPC Web Spy a rating of 4, rather than 5, stars.
Other than these problems I really like PPC Web Spy. As I have said, it's addictive, and
it's not an overly expensive way to learn about what the competition is doing.
